Melissa Squirlock

Our fearless leader, Melissa Squirlock, brings a bright new light to our crew as well as our lesson plans. Her enthusiasm spills over, exciting the students to learn in a new way. The program has grown leaps and bounds under her supervision!

Although originally from New Jersey, she lived in Indiana for most of her life. She completed her undergraduate work at Indiana University and received her Master's of Science in Environmental Education from Ball State University.  She moved to Tennessee in the summer of 2007 to work at the Butternut Valley Nature Center.

Her hobbies include hiking, camping, movies, kayaking, and writing.  She  really enjoys working with animals and has two cats of her own.

Melissa Squirlock

"I love going to Dry Creek each week because I get to see a new insect, spider, bird, or lizard every day that I am out there.  I enjoy my work because although I'm teaching my students, I also learn so much from them!"
